Acc. to an old interpretation ἔγχελυς is a cross of ἔχις and a word like Lat. anguis (from which anguilla) `snake'. Note further Lesb. ἴμβηρις ἔγχελυς. Μηθυμναῖοι H, beside which you have λέβηρις `skin of a snake. The words are no doubt non-IE. - Pok. 43ff. Thompson Fishes s. v.; also Strömberg Fischnamen 10ff.Page in Frisk: 1,439-440
